CSEB house construction in Hyderabad

ZB EcoTech designs and builds homes with compressed stabilised earth blocks (CSEB) on land you own, in and around Hyderabad. We work turnkey: design, materials and labour, from the soil test to handover.

The earth-block walls carry the house themselves, with no concrete frame, for simplex, duplex, G+1 and G+2 homes. The blocks are made by CJ EcoTech Supply, our sister company, often from the soil on your own plot.

What a CSEB house is

A CSEB is soil mixed with a little cement (around 5%) and water, pressed hard in a machine and cured for about four weeks. It isn’t fired, so there’s no kiln.

In a CSEB house the blocks are the structure: load-bearing walls on a raised plinth, with the roof on top. Because the blocks are large and very regular, the walls can be left exposed, with no plaster.

How we build a CSEB house

  1. Soil test

We check whether your soil makes good blocks, and with which mix. For the foundation design, your structural engineer may ask for a separate soil investigation.

  2. Design and drawings

A design around your plot, your family and the way the sun moves, with load-bearing earth walls up to G+2.

  3. Permission

You, or your representative, sign the application. We prepare the drawings and guide you through it.

  4. Block making

When your soil suits, CJ EcoTech brings its press and operator to your plot. Blocks cure for about four weeks before they go into walls, so block making starts early.

  5. Foundation and plinth

A raised plinth keeps the walls away from standing water.

  6. Walls and roof

Load-bearing earth-block walls, and a roof with overhangs that keep heavy rain off them.

  7. Handover

Finishes, doors and windows, a final walk-through, and the keys.

Why build with CSEB

Cooler rooms

Thick earth walls take in the day’s heat slowly and give it out at night.

Walls from your own ground

When the soil tests suitable, the earth dug for foundations becomes the walls, with less to truck in and less to throw away.

No plaster needed

Exposed earth walls skip plastering and repainting.

Strong walls

The Auroville Earth Institute measures an average dry strength of 7.5 MPa for well-made blocks, about twice that of country-fired bricks.

Less carbon

About 12 times less carbon than country-fired bricks, because the blocks are pressed, not fired.

Strength and carbon numbers are the Auroville Earth Institute’s, from Auroville conditions and compared with country-fired bricks. Hyderabad numbers will come from our own tests once our first batches finish curing.

What a CSEB house needs

  • A raised plinth and good roof overhangs, to keep the walls away from standing water and heavy rain. We design these in.
  • Space on site for block making: room for the press, the soil heap and curing, and a water source.
  • Time: about four weeks of curing before blocks go into walls.
  • Soil that suits blocks. If yours doesn’t, blocks can come from elsewhere, or another material may suit you better.
  • A height limit. We build up to G+2 with load-bearing earth walls, and nothing taller.

How much does a compressed earth block house cost?

It depends on the size and design of the home, your site, your soil and the foundation it needs, and the roof and finishes you choose, so we don’t publish a price list.

As a guide, the Auroville Earth Institute found a finished earth-block wall cost 20–25% less than a country-fired brick wall, mainly because it needs no plaster and less mortar. That’s based on Auroville conditions; Hyderabad numbers will come from our own work. Once we’ve visited your plot and tested the soil, we give you a quote that lists what’s included, so you can compare it with others.

Questions about CSEB houses

How many floors can a CSEB house have?

We build independent homes up to G+2 with load-bearing earth-block walls, without a concrete frame. We don’t build taller than that.

Can the blocks be made from my plot’s soil?

Often, yes. If your soil tests suitable, CJ EcoTech brings its own press and operator to your plot. It needs open space for the press, the soil heap and curing, a water source, and about four weeks of curing before blocks go into walls.

Do CSEB walls need plaster?

No, they can be left exposed. A plastered or painted finish is possible too, but then you lose one of CSEB’s savings.

Will the walls get damaged in the rain?

No. The cement in the mix stabilises the blocks. Like any wall, they last longest with a raised plinth, roof overhangs and good drainage, and we design for all three.

Can my own builder use CSEB?

Yes. If you have your own builder, CJ EcoTech Supply can supply the blocks or test your soil.Earth blocks and soil tests →
